Our Roots

We’re always looking to the future for our clients. But it’s nice to take a look back, too. Here’s a snapshot of our 80-year history.

1923

Bratrud, Bjorn and Tangney and the Arthur Middleton Company begin serving the insurance needs of Tacoma and Pierce County.

1974

Bratrud Middleton Insurance Brokers, Inc., is incorporated as a result of a merger between Bratrud, Bjorn and Tangney, and the Arthur Middleton Company.

1980

The corporation purchases the Blair Insurance Agency, Inc., a Puyallup agency.

1982

The corporation purchases the stock of Olympia Insurance Brokers and the assets of the Joyce Farning Agency.

1987

The merger of Dunn Anderson Insurance into Bratrud Middleton is completed.

1988

Continuing the company’s growth pattern, it acquires the Comfort & Fleming Agency.

1989

This year brought added growth with the merging of Bratrud Middleton Financial Services, and the merging of McCallum Insurance Agency and the Jack Sprenger Agency. The offices of Blair Insurance and McCallum Insurance were merged into McCallum Blair Agency and located in Puyallup, Washington. The Jack Sprenger Agency was located in Auburn, Washington.

1994

Continuing south to Longview, Washington, Bratrud Middleton joins forces with the Torrence Insurance Agency and the Martin Insurance Agency.

1995

The offices are merged, forming Torrence Martin Insurance Brokers.

1996

Bratrud’s growth continues, with the acquisition of Shipp Insurance and the merger of Shipp with Adams-Thompson Insurance, forming Adams-Thompson-Shipp Insurance in Vancouver, Washington. Also this year, Yearout Insurance in Aberdeen, Washington, merges with Bratrud.

1997

Soriano Insurance in Bremerton, Washington, merges with Bratrud Middleton.

1999

R. S. Hayward in Bremerton, Washington, merges with Bratrud. Soriano Insurance and R. S. Hayward are combined and operate for a short while under the name Soriano/Hayward.

2000

All offices assume the name Bratrud Middleton Insurance, dropping their prior trade names.

2002

The Al Morrison Agency in Auburn, Washington is acquired.

2003

Bratrud acquires the longtime hometown insurance agency in Bremerton, the B.A. Getschmann Company.

2006

Bratrud Middleton is selected as one of 16 finalists in Washington CEO’s Best Places to Work.

2008

Bratrud Middleton takes the name of Propel Insurance, a reflection of the company’s expertise at creating success with momentum for their clients.

2008

Propel Insurances increases their Seattle office with the addition of experts in two new product lines.

2008

Bratrud Middleton is again selected as a finalist in Washington CEO’s Best Places to Work.

2009

Propel Insurance acquired the policy renewal rights for Liberty Northwest’s direct-sold workers’ compensation policies written in Oregon. This brings the addition of five new branch locations in Oregon.

2009

Propel Insurance is selected as a finalist in Seattle Business (formerly Washington CEO Magazine) Washington’s 100 Best Companies to Work For.

2009

Propel Insurance is honored as a finalist in the Puget Sound Business Journal’s Washington Best Workplaces.

2010

Propel Insurance expands their real estate expertise and their Seattle office with the acquisition of Cascade Risk Placement, Inc of Bellevue and Encore & Company of Lynwood.

2010

Propel Insurance is again honored as a finalist in Seattle Business’ Washington’s 100 Best Companies to Work For.

2010

Propel Insurance is named as a finalist in the Puget Sound Business Journal’s Washington Best Workplaces.

2010

Propel Insurance is selected as one of the 2010 Best Places to Work In Insurance by Business Insurance Magazine.
